Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol
SIOP is a strategy for teachers to use to help make subject matter concepts understandable for students who are still developing English language skills.
Content & Language Objectives
Students who do not know what to learn or what to do are more likely to fail. Therefore, clearly posting and stating content and language objectives sets students up for success. Objectives must be observable and measurable.
The content objective tells what students will learn during the lesson. Example: “Today you will
learn about civil disobedience.”
The language objective tells how the students will learn and/or demonstrate their mastery of
the lesson by reading, speaking, writing, or listening. Example: "You will be able to explain - in writing and verbally - the
differences between civil disobedience and other types of protests."
